Ten Years Out of School? You Probably Do Not Need to Relearn Everything for the FE.
Time since graduation is context, not a diagnosis. Measure concept knowledge, retrieval, handbook skill, and exam execution separately before buying a complete restart.
"I graduated ten years ago" is not a score
Candidates returning after a decade often begin: "I have forgotten everything."
That sentence may combine slow formula recall, an unfamiliar diagram, handbook friction, and lost calculator muscle memory. None alone proves engineering judgment is gone.
Professional experience also does not cover every specification. A decade in one specialty can deepen judgment while leaving college subjects untouched. Start with measurement.
I would ask what kind of rust appears in each area before prescribing Chapter 1.
Four problems that feel like "I forgot everything"
1. The concept is genuinely missing
You cannot explain the governing idea, identify relevant assumptions, or recognize when a relationship applies. This requires instruction and worked examples followed by independent practice.
2. The concept is present, but retrieval is slow
Once you see the equation or the first step, the rest returns quickly. This calls for spaced retrieval and varied practice, not necessarily a full lecture sequence.
3. You understand the idea but cannot navigate the supplied reference
You know what you need but lose time searching for a table, definition, or equation. This requires handbook-location drills and better search vocabulary.
4. You can solve the problem but not under exam conditions
Topic switching, calculator entry, units, flagging decisions, or fatigue causes performance to collapse. More concept videos may do little. You need mixed timed work and a recovery policy.
These categories can coexist. The point is to avoid treating them with the same expensive remedy.
Two public stories, two very different paths
One candidate reported passing FE Other Disciplines on a first attempt 18 years after college. Preparation around work and family included PrepFE, NCEES practice exams, calculator training, and ChatGPT for organizing material and gaps.
Another FE Civil candidate reported passing on a ninth attempt after the same 18-year gap. Later preparation added a formal course, multiple practice sources, attention to weaker subjects and time pressure, and ChatGPT support.
First attempt versus ninth shows why the same graduation gap cannot determine an intervention. Prior knowledge, discipline, preparation, and execution differed.
The stories are motivational, but they are not a dataset. We do not see the many candidates who used similar resources and did not publish a result. We should borrow mechanisms, not promises.
A better re-entry sequence
Step 1: Relearn the exam before relearning engineering
Read current NCEES specifications, calculator policy, and Examinee Guide. The FE has 110 questions and five hours 20 minutes of testing within a six-hour appointment; the handbook is electronic.

Step 2: Take a broad, low-stakes diagnostic
Sample every published area with original aligned questions, unaided. Record correctness, confidence, time, handbook path, and failure type.
This first pass prioritizes; it does not predict a result.
Step 3: Confirm before you commit
Confirm apparent weakness with different questions. One careless error should not trigger ten hours of video; one lucky answer should not clear a subject.
Use three provisional labels:
"Maintain" is not "skip." It is a smaller, spaced commitment until new evidence says otherwise.
- Focus: repeated current evidence supports targeted rebuilding.
- Verify: evidence is thin, inconsistent, or assisted.
- Maintain: repeated unaided performance is stable, with later retesting scheduled.
Step 4: Rebuild the first failure point
Find the first failed decision: model, equation, reference, units, calculator, or time. Do not automatically reopen the entire chapter.
Give the smallest intervention that can fix that failure, then test it with a fresh problem. Expand to a full lesson only when the evidence justifies it.
Step 5: Move from chapters to mixed execution
Chapter labels supply clues. Mixed timed sets reveal whether knowledge survives switching, fatigue, and uncertainty.
Build toward realistic half-length or full-length practice using authorized or original material. Practice the approved calculator and electronic-handbook workflow you expect to use.
How I would use AI after a long gap
AI can translate an old explanation, schedule real constraints, classify errors, and give a targeted hint after an attempt.
I would not let it clear a subject or trust its unofficial passing-score calculation. NCEES does not publish the passing score.
Verify technical explanations. FE-oriented evaluations show capability and confident errors; useful tutors need reviewed solutions and structured sequences.
Professional experience is an asset when the plan can see it
Ten years of work may build estimation, units awareness, intuition, and plausibility checks. A generic sequence may miss those assets because it starts with delivery, not evidence.
A good plan credits demonstrated performance and reveals areas a job has not exercised, avoiding assumptions of total mastery or decay.
You may ultimately need a comprehensive rebuild in several subjects. You may discover that other subjects only need retrieval and handbook practice. The diagnostic has done its job when it replaces "I forgot everything" with a short list of specific, testable problems.
