Which FE Exam Should I Take? Civil vs Other Disciplines
State licensing boards generally accept any FE discipline, so technically you can take whichever FE exam you want. Practically, the choice moves your odds more than almost any study decision you will make. Here is the honest trade-off between FE Civil, FE Other Disciplines, and the five other exams — and a fast way to decide.
First, kill the myth: any FE exam counts toward any PE path
State licensing boards generally accept any of the seven FE disciplines as satisfying the FE requirement. Pass FE Mechanical and later pursue a civil PE? In most jurisdictions that is perfectly acceptable — your record simply shows that you passed the FE.
That legal flexibility is real, and it is also where the bad advice starts. "It doesn't matter which one you take" is only half true. It doesn't matter to the board. It matters enormously to your odds of passing, because the seven exams test meaningfully different material.
The default rule: take the FE that matches your degree
Topic overlap is free studying. If you majored in civil engineering, four years of coursework already covered most of the FE Civil specification — statics, structural analysis, geotechnical engineering, hydraulics, transportation. You are reviewing, not learning.
Switch to a different discipline's exam and that advantage inverts. You would be teaching yourself unfamiliar subjects from scratch while your strongest subjects — the ones you could reliably score on — barely appear on the form. Same student, same hours, worse return.
So the default is boring and correct: matching degree, matching FE exam. Everything below is about the exceptions, and about what the published data says happens when people ignore the default.
FE Civil vs FE Other Disciplines: what actually differs
FE Other Disciplines is the most misunderstood of the seven exams. The name suggests a lighter, general-purpose FE. It is not. It is a distinct exam with its own NCEES specification, and its topic list diverges sharply from FE Civil's.
For a civil graduate, that trade means giving up questions in your four strongest subject areas and accepting questions in chemistry and electricity you may not have touched since freshman year.
- FE Civil goes deep on structural analysis and design, geotechnical engineering, transportation, and water resources — the core of a civil curriculum.
- FE Other Disciplines swaps that depth for breadth: heavier advanced mathematics and probability, chemistry, instrumentation and data acquisition, basic electricity and magnetism, and thermal-fluids topics most civil programs treat lightly.
- Both exams use the same format — 110 questions in a roughly six-hour computer-based appointment with the electronic FE Reference Handbook — so neither buys you extra time or fewer questions.
- Specifications are revised periodically. Download both current topic lists from NCEES and compare them line by line before you decide anything.
The pass-rate evidence: same students, very different outcomes
NCEES periodically publishes pass rates broken out by exam and by the test-taker's degree program, and the pattern is blunt: students who sit the exam matching their major pass at substantially higher rates than students from the same major who sit a different exam.
Read that gap carefully. These are the same students — same coursework, same ability. The only variable is exam choice. The "easier-sounding" general exam roughly halves the odds for civil grads, because breadth you never studied beats depth you already have.
The exact figures shift a few points between reporting periods, so treat them as a stable pattern rather than fixed constants, and check the current tables on the NCEES website before quoting them.
When FE Other Disciplines IS the right call
None of this makes FE Other Disciplines a trap. It exists because plenty of engineers do not map cleanly onto the six named disciplines, and for them it is the best-fit exam — with pass rates to match.
The test is always the same question: which current specification overlaps most with what you actually know? For non-traditional majors, the answer is often Other Disciplines. For a civil graduate, it almost never is.
- Your degree has no matching FE exam: engineering physics, engineering management, mining, materials, biomedical, agricultural, or a general engineering program.
- Your coursework was genuinely interdisciplinary, and your strongest subjects are mathematics, probability, chemistry, and broad engineering science rather than any single discipline's core.
- You work in a cross-disciplinary role — safety, systems, technical sales — and you have compared the Other Disciplines specification against your transcript and it honestly matches better than any named exam.
Match your FE choice to your PE plans
If you already know which PE exam you are heading toward, work backwards. Every PE Civil depth exam — structural, geotechnical, transportation, construction, and water resources & environmental — builds on the same civil fundamentals FE Civil tests. Taking FE Civil means your FE prep doubles as the first pass of your PE prep.
The same logic holds elsewhere: FE Mechanical feeds the mechanical PE exams, FE Electrical and Computer feeds the electrical PE exams, and so on. The FE-to-PE pairing is not a legal requirement — it is knowledge continuity. You will simply relearn less later when the two exams share a foundation.
