FE Exam Calculator Guide: Approved Models and Practice Strategy
The best FE calculator is an approved model you can operate without hesitation. Verify the current annual policy first, then practice the exact mode changes and calculations you expect to use under time pressure.
Calculator families accepted for 2026
NCEES states that the approved list is reviewed annually. The current 2026 policy lists the following model families as acceptable for NCEES examinations.
Build a calculator readiness checklist
Calculator readiness means knowing the current mode and recognizing when a stored setting could change the result. Start every practice block with a short status check.
- Confirm degree or radian mode before trigonometry.
- Know how scientific notation and engineering notation are displayed.
- Practice rectangular and polar complex-number conversion when your discipline needs it.
- Use statistics, regression, matrix, or equation-solving features only after verifying the input format.
- Reset or clear stored values when they could contaminate the next calculation.
Practice the calculator with the handbook
The calculator does not choose the model. During practice, identify the governing equation in the supplied reference material, write the units and assumptions, and only then enter the arithmetic.
Create a short calculator log for recurring actions that slow you down. A two-minute weekly drill on those actions is more useful than discovering the keystrokes during a timed exam.
Exam-day handling
The May 2026 NCEES Examinee Guide says an approved calculator may enter the testing room without its cover. It also describes an on-screen TI-30XS option. Read the current guide for the complete permitted-items list and test-center procedure.
- Check the battery and display before leaving for the test center.
- Remove the calculator cover if the current guide requires it.
- Do not bring notes, manuals, or unapproved electronic devices into the testing room.
