The 30-Lookup FE Reference Handbook Challenge
Do not memorize page numbers. Train yourself to recognize the concept, choose a precise search term, and confirm that the result is the relationship you actually need.
Handbook navigation is a trainable skill
Knowing that a formula exists is not the same as finding it under pressure.
NCEES provides an electronic FE Reference Handbook during the computer-based exam but says it does not contain everything candidates are expected to know. The skill is recognizing whether a reference is likely available, then retrieving and interpreting it efficiently.
This challenge trains that skill legally. Download your current handbook through MyNCEES. Do not use a copied file from a study group, and do not repost the handbook. NCEES permits a downloaded handbook to be printed for personal use but restricts copying, electronic distribution, and online posting without permission.
How to run the challenge
Use the same PDF you currently study with. For each prompt:
Do not count success because the PDF landed near a familiar symbol. Name the governing concept, identify the variables, and state the surrounding conditions.
Start without a time target. On the second pass, try to reduce wasted searches. On the third pass, aim for a pace that fits your own practice strategy. A fixed number of seconds is not an NCEES standard, and speed without correct interpretation is not progress.
- Read only the lookup goal.
- Write the first search term you would try.
- Start a timer and search.
- Stop when you can identify the relevant section and explain why it applies.
- Record the search term, elapsed time, false starts, and result quality.
Round 1: Universal navigation
- Area conversion: Find the information needed to convert an acre-based quantity into square feet. Search seed: acre.
- Pressure conversion: Locate a pressure conversion between an SI unit and a U.S. customary unit. Search seed: pressure or the unit name.
- Temperature: Find the reference needed to distinguish an absolute temperature from a temperature difference. Search seed: temperature.
- Quadratic relationship: Locate the general tool for the roots of a second-degree polynomial. Search seed: quadratic.
- Vector projection: Find the operation that extracts one vector's component along another. Search seed: dot product.
- Normal probability: Locate the standard-normal material needed to interpret a z-value. Search seed: normal distribution.
- Best-fit line: Find the section used to calculate a linear least-squares relationship. Search seed: least squares.
- Compound cash flow: Locate the factor family used to move equal periodic amounts to a present value. Search seed: uniform series.
- Shape centroid: Find the centroid data for a common plane area without searching for the exact problem wording. Search seed: the shape name.
- Shifted area inertia: Locate the relationship used when a centroidal axis is moved to a parallel axis. Search seed: parallel axis.
Round 2: Mechanics and structures
- Impending slip: Find the relationship connecting normal force and limiting dry-friction force. Search seed: friction.
- Restitution: Locate the definition used for relative velocity before and after an impact. Search seed: coefficient of restitution.
- Circular-shaft torsion: Find the material connecting torque, shear stress, radius, and polar geometry. Search seed: torsion.
- Beam slope or deflection: Locate the correct case for a simply supported beam with a concentrated load. Search seed: beam deflection.
- Column instability: Find the ideal-column buckling relationship and its end-condition information. Search seed: buckling.
- Stress transformation: Locate the plane-stress tool used to relate normal and shear components on rotated planes. Search seed: Mohr.
- Truss geometry: Find a reference that helps resolve member forces by direction rather than by memorized drawing. Search seed: truss or method of joints.
- Composite-section property: Locate the ingredients needed to assemble the centroid and moment of inertia of several areas. Search seed: composite areas.
Round 3: Fluids, water, and environmental work
- Hydrostatic resultant: Find the section for force on a submerged plane surface and the location of its line of action. Search seed: hydrostatic force.
- Flow regime: Locate the dimensionless quantity used to distinguish viscous flow regimes in a pipe. Search seed: Reynolds.
- Pipe energy loss: Find the major-loss relationship involving pipe length, diameter, velocity, and a resistance factor. Search seed: Darcy.
- Local loss: Locate the form used for a valve, bend, entrance, or other fitting. Search seed: minor loss.
- Pump input and output: Find the relationships needed to connect flow, head, power, and efficiency. Search seed: pump.
- Open-channel flow: Locate the common uniform-flow relationship and identify where its roughness term is defined. Search seed: Manning.
- Peak runoff estimate: Find the rainfall-runoff method that combines intensity, drainage area, and a runoff parameter. Search seed: rational method.
- Oxygen demand: Locate the first-order framework commonly used for biochemical oxygen demand over time. Search seed: BOD.
Round 4: Geotechnical, transportation, and construction
These are navigation prompts, not exam predictions. Your discipline's current specification remains the scope document. Material outside it is search practice, not a recommendation to expand your plan.
- Soil effective stress: Find the relationship separating total stress, pore-water pressure, and effective stress. Search seed: effective stress.
- Earth pressure state: Locate the active and passive lateral earth-pressure material and identify the assumptions around the coefficient you need. Search seed: earth pressure.
- Stopping sight distance: Find the components that represent perception-reaction and braking distance. Search seed: stopping sight.
- Earthwork productivity: Locate the construction relationship connecting production rate, quantity, and duration. Search seed: productivity.
Score the process, not just the stopwatch
Give yourself one point for each of the following:
A fast one-point lookup is less useful than a slower five-point lookup. Improve both over repeated rounds.
Build a personal search dictionary from misses. If head loss works better for you than energy loss, record it. If a symbol produces dozens of results, replace it with a concept word. Do not memorize page numbers; handbook editions and the exam interface can change.

- I reached the correct section without more than one false result.
- I identified the variables and units.
- I checked nearby definitions or applicability conditions.
- I could return to the same reference using a second search term.
