FE Exam vs. EIT Certification: What Happens After You Pass
The FE exam is a national examination administered through NCEES. Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Engineer Intern (EI) is a state-board designation. Passing the FE is commonly required, but it does not create the same automatic credential in every jurisdiction.
The FE exam is the examination step
The Fundamentals of Engineering exam is generally the first examination step toward professional engineering licensure. It is computer based, offered year-round at approved Pearson test centers, and available in seven disciplines.
Registration and eligibility can still depend on the licensing board connected to your location and education. Check the state or territory details on the NCEES FE page before paying or scheduling.
EIT and EI are board-issued designations
After passing the FE, some boards require a separate application, education documentation, fee, or verification before issuing an EIT or EI certificate. The name also varies: some jurisdictions use Engineer-in-Training, while others use Engineer Intern.
For example, the current NCEES state guidance shows jurisdictions where candidates apply to the board after passing. That is why a passing result and an issued certificate should not be described as the same event.
A practical sequence to follow
Use the sequence below as a checklist, then replace each general step with the requirements published by your licensing board.
- Identify the board or jurisdiction whose rules apply to you.
- Confirm whether preapproval is required before FE registration.
- Register and schedule through MyNCEES when eligible.
- Take the FE exam and wait for the official pass/fail result.
- Apply for EIT or EI certification if your board requires a separate application.
- Keep the result and certification records available for future PE licensure steps.
Which term belongs on a resume
Use wording that matches the status you can document. If you passed the FE but have not received a board-issued designation, state that you passed the FE exam rather than claiming an EIT certificate. After certification, use the exact title and jurisdiction shown by the board.
Avoid implying professional-engineer licensure. EIT or EI status is an early licensure-path milestone, not permission to present yourself as a licensed P.E.
