Am I Ready for the FE Exam? Why One Practice Score Is Not Enough
A practice-exam percentage is useful evidence, but it is not a verdict. Here is how the same score can support two very different study decisions.
A percentage is not a verdict
I understand why candidates ask, "I got 63%. Am I ready?"
It feels like a question that should have a clean answer. Unfortunately, the honest answer is not a percentage. NCEES reports the FE result as pass or fail, converts raw performance to a scaled score to account for minor differences among exam forms, and does not publish the passing score. A practice provider's 63% is therefore not a portable substitute for a published cutoff.
Meet two hypothetical 63% candidates
Candidate A completed a representative, timed practice exam in one sitting. Their misses were spread across several topics. They finished on time, used the reference handbook deliberately, and scored within a narrow band on two other mixed exams.
Candidate B completed a topic-heavy set over several breaks. Strong topics dominated, while two priority areas were barely sampled. They checked solutions between blocks, previously ran out of time, and have scores ranging from the low 50s to the low 70s.
Both can truthfully report 63%. They should not make the same study decision.
Candidate A has evidence of a stable floor. Candidate B has evidence of a possible ceiling, but not yet a dependable floor. I would move Candidate A toward full simulations and targeted cleanup. I would keep Candidate B in verification mode until the missing coverage and pacing questions are resolved.
The difference is not confidence. It is evidence quality.
The five questions behind any practice score
1. What did the exam actually sample?
A percentage has meaning only in relation to the question mix. Compare the practice set with the current NCEES specification for your discipline. Were all major knowledge areas represented? Were some topics overrepresented because they happened to be easy for you?
A 63% built on broad coverage tells you more than a 70% built on a comfortable subset. Do not invent your own topic weights, and do not assume every third-party set mirrors an NCEES form exactly.
2. Were the conditions honest?
"Timed" should mean one planned sitting, normal breaks, no solution checking, and only the resources you intend to practice with. The real FE appointment includes 110 questions and 5 hours and 20 minutes of exam time within a six-hour appointment, but your shorter practice set can still test honest pacing if you preserve its time limit.
Pause-and-resume practice is excellent for learning. It is weak evidence for readiness. Label it correctly.
3. How many answers were known, recovered, or guessed?
Two correct answers can carry different information. One may come from a clean model, correct equation, unit check, and confident choice. Another may come from eliminating two options and guessing.
I recommend tagging every item immediately after answering:
Do the same for wrong answers: concept, setup, lookup, calculation, unit, or time. A 63% with many defensible recoveries can improve quickly. A 63% with many lucky guesses is fragile.

4. Is the result repeatable?
One mock is a snapshot. Three separated mixed sets begin to show a range.
Do not simply average them and declare victory. Look for the lower edge. If your recent scores are 62%, 64%, and 63% under comparable conditions, you have a different planning problem than if they are 52%, 74%, and 63%.
The second pattern may reflect uneven coverage, fatigue, pacing, or handbook use. Find the source of that variance.
5. What failed under time pressure?
The final percentage hides sequence. Plot performance by quarter of the session. Did accuracy collapse late? Did you spend too long proving answers in your strongest topic? Did handbook searches become slower as fatigue increased?
Readiness requires knowledge and retrieval under a clock. A correct but consistently slow solution can still damage the rest of the exam.
Use a readiness dashboard, not a magic line
My preferred dashboard has five dimensions:
For each dimension, use one of three labels: Focus, Verify, or Maintain.
"Maintain" does not mean never study the topic again. It means the current evidence supports lighter maintenance and periodic retesting. "Verify" means the evidence is too thin or too noisy. "Focus" means a repeated, consequential weakness is already visible.
This framing prevents the most expensive mistake I see in FE preparation: treating uncertainty as mastery, or treating one disappointing number as proof that everything must be relearned.
- Coverage: Have you sampled the current specification broadly?
- Consistency: Is your recent performance stable across independent sets?
- Pacing: Can you complete representative work without a late-session collapse?
- Defensibility: How much of the score came from methods you can explain?
- Reference fluency: Can you find and apply handbook material without wandering?
What I would do next after a 63%
First, preserve the result. Record the source, date, time limit, interruptions, topic mix, confidence tags, and whether you reviewed answers during the attempt.
Second, identify the two largest unknowns. If coverage is the problem, take a mixed set that fills the missing areas. If pacing is the problem, run a timed block. If guesses inflated the score, retest those concepts with new questions after several days.
Third, make your next study week conditional. Do not schedule ten hours of broad review because one number made you anxious. Allocate time only after deciding which evidence would change your plan.
Finally, use an NCEES interactive practice exam as an important calibration point when appropriate for your budget and stage. It is produced by the organization that develops the exam and supports timed practice and solution review. Even then, one result is still evidence, not a published pass threshold.
The useful question is not, "Is 63% enough?" It is, "What does this 63% prove, what does it fail to prove, and what is the cheapest next test of the uncertainty?"
